About Chicago (1927)

Chicago (1927) is an American comedy-drama silent film. The film is about a married woman (Phyllis Haver) who becomes famous when she goes on trial for shooting her lover and tries to stop herself from being convicted.

Chicago has had many film or musical adaptions throughout time, including the 2002 movie, which I gain a lot of inspiration from in modernizing the 1927 version.

Poster Design

The scene I chose to draw on the movie poster is when the main character Roxie Hart is about to shoot her husband. I loved how dynamic the pose was despite the actress sitting, and how your eyes lead from the gun to the pointing finger.

For the background, I put a simple style of jail bars to not distract too much from the portrait. I also added a blood splash to highlight the subject, as well as nod to the plot of murder in the storyline. Lastly, I decided to have the title "Chicago" be in a retro neon sign styled font to draw attention and also, reference to the 2002 version.
